Election Commission Changes Date for General Elections Yet Again

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially notified the date for General Elections in the country.

According to media reports, the General Elections for the National Assembly and all provincial assemblies will be held on Thursday, 8 February 2024.

Yesterday, the ECP officials had initially informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) that General Elections would be held on 11 February 2024.

Justice Athar Minallah has ordered the ECP to ensure General Elections are organized across the country on 8 February 2024.

Last night, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja met President Arif Alvi regarding the election date on the orders of the apex court.

The ECP and President mutually agreed to hold the elections on February 8, ending months-long uncertainty. Earlier today, ECP submitted a notification in the Supreme Court regarding the election date.

The three member bench was informed that all the respondents have given their approval to the new election date.

Following the dissolution of assemblies in August, elections were supposed to be held in November. However, it couldn’t be held on time due to fresh demarcation of constituencies under a new census.
