Islamabad: Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik has underscored the importance of moving beyond a reactive response to rainfall and floods towards sustained and long-term urban resilience planning. He emphasized this crucial shift in approach during a seminar titled "Urban Flood Resilience Measures - Vision 2027: Beyond the Rains and Floods" held in Islamabad.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Chairman NDMA highlighted the need for a proactive approach to urban flood management. He suggested that the focus should be on preparedness, infrastructure resilience, institutional ownership, and the timely implementation of identified interventions. The seminar served as a platform to discuss these issues and explore strategies for effective flood management.
During the seminar, it was brought to attention that urban flooding can be effectively managed through enhancing drainage capacity, urban development, infrastructure maintenance, stormwater management, and institutional coordination. These measures are considered essential for building sustainable urban environments that can withstand the challenges posed by heavy rains and floods.
