Islamabad: Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) are collaborating to promote modern technology and improved seeds in the agricultural sector. A significant breakthrough has been achieved at the policy level regarding the cultivation of genetically modified 'GM Maize' in Pakistan.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Cabinet Committee has granted in-principle approval for the cultivation of genetically modified 'GM Maize'. This new seed technology is expected to increase resistance against pests, diseases, and weather effects, thus enhancing the agricultural sector's ability to adapt to modern seeds, achieve higher yields, and combat climate change.
The Chief Executive of SIFC's Green Pakistan Initiative, along with the Federal Finance Minister, attended the committee meeting where the decision was made. Global multinational companies such as Monsanto, Bayer, Cargill, Syngenta, and Corteva have been active in Pakistan's seed industry since the 1980s.
According to a State Bank report, these multinational companies have played a key role in introducing agricultural innovation and new technologies through hybrid seeds. This collaboration between SIFC and GPI marks a pivotal step forward in Pakistan's agricultural advancement.
