UN calls for urgent steps to ensure nationwide ceasefire in Syria

United Nations has warned of troubling signs of recent military escalation in Syria calling for taking urgent steps to ensure nationwide ceasefire in the country.

In a briefing to the UN Security Council, the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen voiced concern that an escalatory cycle could see events further unravel and will put international peace and security at risk.

He said there is dire need to genuinely restore Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Monsoon rains, floods death toll reaches 1,033: NDMA

The death toll from torrential monsoon rains and floods since the onset of the rainy season across the country has reached 1033.

According to National Disaster Management Authority, 1527 individuals were also injured in various rains and flood related incidents.

The NDMA issued a situation report that accounted overall life, property, and infrastructure losses caused by the heavy rains lashing out various parts of the country.

Overall, more than 3451 kilometers roads, 149 bridges, 170 shops, and 949,858 houses were damaged due to the heavy rains in various districts of all the provinces, including Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The rains also caused losses of more than 719,000 livestock animals.

Pakistan rejects ‘conjectural allegations’ by Afghanistan

Pakistan has noted with deep concern the allegation by Acting Afghan Defence Minister regarding use of its air space in the US counter-terrorism drone operation in Afghanistan.

Responding to media queries, Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said in the absence of any evidence, as acknowledged by the Afghan Minister himself, such conjectural allegations are highly regrettable and defy the norms of responsible diplomatic conduct.

He said Pakistan reaffirms its belief in the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states and condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The spokesperson urged the Afghan interim authorities to ensure fulfilment of international commitments made by Afghanistan not to allow the use of its territory for terrorism against any country.

BISP disburses over Rs6b among 255,946 flood-affected families

Benazir Income Support Programme has so far disbursed over six billion rupees among 255,946 families under the Flood Relief Cash Assistance initiative.

The payment centers of the BISP’s partner banks remained open on Sunday for the smooth disbursement of payment to flood affectees in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The affected families can send their CNIC number to 8171 for registration in Flood Relief Cash Assistance program and upon receiving payment message they can visit their nearby campsite to receive their payment.

A control Room has also been established at BISP headquarters to ensure smooth payments to the affectees.

Floods in Pakistan: US media headlining flood devastation in Pakistan

The US print and electronic media is giving wide coverage to the devastation caused by floods in Pakistan.

It is also focusing on the relief work done in difficult situations across the country by government agencies and humanitarian organizations and the government’s appeal for international help to deal with the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan-American community is busy in raising funds for the flood victims.

The American-Pakistani Political Action Committee has already collected more than half a million dollars donations.

A board member of the Committee Assad Chaudhry said that donations are pouring in which would be deposited in Pakistan government’s accounts devoted to flood relief.
