Police Arrested 42 Terrorists In August In Pakistan’s Punjab Province

The Counter Terrorism Department of Police, in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, arrested 42 terrorists from banned organisations in Aug, according to official data.

The data, shared by the police yesterday, revealed that, the arrested terrorists include eight from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, three from the Daesh and two from al-Qaeda, who were planning to conduct terrorist activities in the country.

Police said that, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted over 1,000 combing operations across the province, to arrest the militants, especially in the districts of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Multan, Sargodha, Chiniot, Kasur and Mandi Bahauddin.

All the arrested terrorists were involved in terrorist activities, or they had planned to carry out subversive activities, and were also working to recruit fresh blood for their respective organisations, the police said.

During the operation, the CTD confiscated a cache of arms and ammunition from the terrorists, including explosive materials, detonators, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), fuses and a vast amount of local and foreign currency

Sindh Announces Public Holiday on Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai

The Government of Sindh has declared 1 September 2023 (Friday), a public holiday in the province to commemorate the Urs (death anniversary) of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

According to the official notification, the decision applies to all offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh, with the exception of essential services.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is a revered Sufi saint, poet, and scholar. His Urs is commemorated by thousands of devotees at his shrine in Bhit Shah, Sindh. The event includes recitations of his poetry, musical renditions of his kalam (writings), and various other religious and cultural activities.

In separate news, the Sindh Health Department has banned smoking, gutka, and mainpuri in all public sector offices and hospitals across the province in an effort to promote healthier environments. Sindh’s Caretaker Health Minister, Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz, announced the ban on Friday.

Dr. Irshad Memon, the Director General of Health Services Sindh, has taken charge of ensuring that the ban is strictly enforced.

Written instructions have been issued to all Directors and Medical Superintendents of major hospitals and medical institutes, urging them to execute the ban effectively.

FBR Directs Companies, AOPs to Retain Record of Beneficial Owners for 10 Years

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has directed all companies and association of persons (AOPs) to retain the records of all beneficial owners for a period of ten years.

The FBR amended Income Tax Rules, 2002 on Monday to introduce a new “Chapter i.e. Record of Beneficial Owners. Under the new rules, the Board shall retain the records of beneficial owners of all companies and association of persons (AOPs) registered with the Board for a period of ten years from the date when that company or AOP ceases to be registered with FBR.

Under the new rules, every company and association of persons (AOP), on its initial registration with FBR, shall electronically furnish the particulars of its beneficial owners to the Board as prescribed Form through the Board’s online system.

Every company and AOP, already registered with FBR, shall electronically furnish the particulars of its beneficial owners to the Board on or before December 31, 2023.

The record of the beneficial owners shall be updated whenever there is a change in any of the particulars of the beneficial owner as stipulated in Form within 30 days from the date when the change occurs, FBR added.

In the case of a non-profit organization, the settlor, trustee, founder, promoter, beneficiary, or class of beneficiary, as the case may be, will be the beneficial owners of the nonprofit organization: Provided that where the beneficiary or class of beneficiary of the non-profit organization is general public, the beneficiary or class of beneficiary of such nonprofit organization shall be exempted from the requirement of providing information of beneficial owners.

In case there is no change in the beneficial owners of the Company or AOP throughout a particular tax year, the Company or AOP as the case may, shall furnish a “Certificate of Confirmation for Beneficial Owner” to this effect as prescribed in Form through Board’s online system along with the Income Tax return to be filed for that tax year, according to the new rules.

Electricity Prices Increased by 80% Since 2022

People around the country have lately voiced their disappointment and outrage over high electricity bills, with the past year and a half alone seeing up to an 80 percent increase in power tariffs.

Since 2022, the power tariff has jumped by Rs. 15.41, while the tax on commercial and domestic consumers is 78 percent and over 50 percent, respectively, according to a national daily.

Electricity rates for non-protected domestic users jumped by 80 percent, with the per-unit rate seeing an increase of Rs. 10.91 to Rs. 24.39 from Rs. 13.48 last year.

Further breakdown of the data reveals that bills for up to 200 units have increased by 60 percent. The unit that was last year sold for Rs. 18.95 has jumped to Rs. 30.86.

Moreover, the power tariff for consumers with usage of 300 units was raised by Rs. 12.91 per unit from Rs. 22.14 last year to Rs. 35.04.

For 400-unit consumers, the power tariff increased by Rs. 14.41, bringing the per-unit cost to Rs. 39.94.

In one and a half years, the cost for customers posting consumption of 500 units or more was hiked by Rs. 15.41 per unit. Meanwhile, the same tariff has seen a big increase to Rs. 50.63 per unit for consumers with 700 units or more during a single billing cycle.
