China’s Shihezi city delights Times Square with fruits of green development

The 30-second video showcases sweet fruits, intoxicating wines, a green city image and a happy life of people from Shihezi in China’s Xinjiang. It is also an epitome of China’s efforts to lead urban development with the concept of green development.

Shihezi, located in northwest China, grows cotton of high quality due to its dry and rainless climate. Melons, watermelons and flat peaches are also sweet and tasty due to the long sunshine. Shihezi is also in the world’s “golden zone” for grape planting. The natural advantages of climate and soil, coupled with irrigation by glacier and snow water from the Tianshan Mountains, ensure the high quality of local wine grape and robust development of wine industry.

One can not only feel the changes of the four seasons in the city, but also experience the landscape and pastoral scenery in the countryside. Founded only 70 years ago, the young city integrates the concept of green and ecological garden city into urban construction and development. It is committed to making the city embrace the forest and let the forest enter the city. People get more happiness and satisfaction from the development of the city.

Data show that the urban green area of Shihezi reaches 2,680 hectares, and the green coverage rate reaches 43%. There are more than 100 kinds of flowers and trees and more than 2.3 million trees in the urban area, which wins it the reputation of the “Shining Pearl in the Gobi Desert”. In 2002, it won the UN

Here are PCB’s Nominees for Most Valuable Player of the Year Award

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed the four nominees for the Most Valuable Cricket of 2021 to reward the players for their exceptional contribution to the national team over the past year.

Pakistan had a formidable year in all three formats in the previous year and much of that was down to the performances from the core of the team, with contributions from all the team members also playing a crucial role.

Let’s have a look at the four nominees:

Babar Azam

Pakistan’s all-format captain was exceptional in all three formats in 2021. He finished as the number one batter in the world in both ODIs and T20Is while he also finished inside the top 10 in Test rankings. Babar scored 416 runs in 8 Tests, 405 runs in 6 ODIs and 939 runs 29 T20Is in the calendar year.

Hasan Ali

Hasan Ali had a remarkable 2021 in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. He finished as Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is and second-highest wicket-taker in Tests. Hasan picked up 41 wickets in 8 Tests, 7 wickets in 4 ODIs, and 25 wickets in 18 T20Is.

Mohammad Rizwan

The wicket-keeper batter was phenomenal in all three formats in the calendar year. Rizwan created history by becoming the leading run-scorer in T20Is in a calendar year and was superb in Tests as well. He scored 455 runs in 9 Tests, 134 runs in 6 ODIs, and 1,326 runs in 29 T20Is in 2021. He also had a total of 56 dismissals in all three formats.

Saqlain Mushtaq Turns Down Offer for Pakistan’s Head Coach Position: Reports

Former Test cricketer, Saqlain Mushtaq, has reportedly turned down Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) offer to join the national cricket team as the permanent head coach.

The PCB roped in Saqlain as Pakistan’s interim head coach for the T20 World Cup 2021 and the series against Bangladesh and West Indies after the sudden resignation of Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis ahead of the event.

Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, players, and the management at the PCB were satisfied with Saqlain’s work ethic and player management. Keeping this in mind, the cricket board offered him a permanent position, which he reportedly turned down, citing prior commitments and business activities.

The 45-year-old informed Chairman PCB, Ramiz Raja, about his decision in a recent meeting.

It was reported that Saqlain told the chairman that while he was happy to have contributed as interim head coach, he wouldn’t be able to accept a long-term and permanent assignment as head coach.

He would, however, continue serving as the coach at the High-Performance Centre in Lahore and would be available for series and tour-based assignments.

Saqlain also conveyed that his business has already been affected due to his absence.

The development comes days after media reports termed him the front-runner for the Pakistan head coach position.

“If he [Saqlain] applies for the post, he will receive due consideration,” Business Recorder quoted a PCB official as saying.

Saqlain had a short but very successful stint as interim coach. During his tenure, Pakistan won 11 out of 12 T20Is, and both Tests matches against Bangladesh.

The only loss came against Australia in the T20 World Cup semi-final when Matthew Wade’s penultimate over heroics denied Pakistan their third T20 World Cup final. Australia later went on to win the title.

Ramiz Raja Acknowledges Mohammad Hafeez’s Tireless Efforts After His Retirement

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Ramiz Raja, was all praise for the outgoing seasoned all-rounder, Mohammad Hafeez.

In an official statement, Ramiz said that Hafeez has been “a wholehearted cricketer who worked tirelessly at his game to have a long and fruitful career.”

The PCB Chairman also commented on how the seasoned campaigner adjusted to different formats and played the anchor’s role in Pakistan’s cricket over the past decade.

“Later in his career, he became a T20 specialist, where he was never out of touch with modern demands of this testing format. His batsmanship took a sprightly turn, nailing sixes almost at will,” the PCB quoted Ramiz as saying.

“He has worn the green blazer with pride, for which we at the PCB are thankful. I wish him the best of luck for his future life and thank him again for his magnificent contribution to Pakistan cricket,” he added.

The 41-year-old announced his retirement on Monday after an illustrious career of 18 years. During his career, Hafeez scored 12,780 international runs and took 253 wickets in 392 international matches for Pakistan. He also led Pakistan in 29 T20I matches, winning 18 matches, including a one-over eliminator against Australia.

He was also part of the squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in England and Wales. Overall, Hafeez played in three Cricket World Cups (2007, 2011, and 2019), six T20 World Cups (2007, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2021), and three ICC Champions Trophy events (2006, 2013, and 2017).

Sarfaraz Lashes Out After Ex-Cricketer Blames Him for Wasting Fawad Alam’s Career

Former Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed lashed out at the former member of the selection committee, Tauseef Ahmed. Tauseef had earlier stated that Sarfaraz Ahmed was the reason why veteran middle-order batter, Fawad Alam, could not return to Pakistan’s Test side.

Sarfaraz said that he too has a lot of stories about what went behind the scenes during his tenure as captain of the national side but he keeps quiet otherwise a lot of people will face difficulties. Sarfaraz added that there are various types of conversations that take place in the locker room and those conversations should be kept private rather than revealing them in front of the world.

Former off-spinner, Tauseef Ahmed was a member of the selection committee headed by former middle-order batter, Inzamam-ul-Haq, during Sarfaraz’s reign as captain of the national side.

Tauseef revealed that Sarfaraz and the then Pakistan head coach, Mickey Arthur, were given a choice on whether to choose Saad Ali or Fawad Alam for Pakistan’s tour of England. Sarfaraz opted to pick the young middle-order batter instead of Fawad Alam which prevented him from making a long-awaited comeback to the national side.

Fawad did eventually make a comeback to the national side after a gap of more than 10 years and proved his mettle by scoring some crucial runs including multiple centuries in the past year.

Sarfaraz, on the other hand, has been in and out of the Pakistan squad for the past few years and is determined to make a comeback by performing in the upcoming seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League.

Sindh Likely to Close Schools and Colleges Again

The Government of Sindh is considering closing down schools and colleges in Karachi on account of the growing number of cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The Sindh Health Department announced in a statement on Tuesday that the authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will make a decision in this regard within two or three days.

The development comes just a day after the educational institutes in the provinces reopened after the winter vacations.

The Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, revealed on Monday that the COVID-19 infection rate in Karachi had crossed 8.9 percent and that most of the cases were of the Omicron variant.

“People should protect themselves by wearing masks and get vaccinated because most of the cases are of unvaccinated people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, has directed the concerned authorities to increase the vaccination campaigns in Karachi and Hyderabad and take action against violations of the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the Omicron variant appears to have a “growth advantage” over the Delta variant which was previously the fastest spreading variant of the virus.

A recent study conducted by the University of Copenhagen, Statistics Denmark, and Statens Serum Institut (SSI), suggests that the virus can mutate itself against the immunity obtained from vaccines.

The researchers said, “Our findings confirm that the rapid spread of the Omicron (variant) primarily can be ascribed to the immune evasiveness rather than an inherent increase in the basic transmissibility”.

However, the study is yet to be peer-reviewed.
